There were some raised eyebrows among the Midlands foodie set when, in 2006, Maiyango began picking up awards - not only Best Eating Experience in the Midlands and Wales, but also runners up nationally - because the chef Philip Sharpe was only 27, and the restaurant had been open for just over six months. However, anyone who visits can see why it has attracted attention, and why it and its' proprietors seem bound for big things.

Maiyango reflects the owners' desire to bring together everything they loved about living and travelling in Asia, India, Africa and Australia. The décor uses dark wood and deep piles of cushions with luxurious fabrics billowing from the ceiling to create an exotic almost Middle Eastern ambience, which perfectly complements the relaxed atmosphere generated by the staff and all day opening. The food is sophisticated and interesting - 'Salmon glazed with Himalayan green tea' or 'A salad of crab dressed with mango and chorizo', for example - and Sunday lunch has become particularly popular thanks to clever twists, such as slowly roasting chicken with lemongrass.

If you decide to book - and this is advisable at the weekend - ask for one of the coveted alcoves. There are only three but they make for a great evening watching Leicester's loveliest sip cocktails in the cocktail lounge.

Wow! The food at Maiyango is fantastic!! I booked the restaurant to entertain some new clients and we all raved about the food, the special touches they add to your dining experience goes down a treat and their extensive cocktail menu will have you sat there for hours!! Would most certainly recommend! May 13th 2008

I booked a table at Maiyango Restaurant for my boyfriend and I on a Tuesday evening. We were given a private booth where we sipped delicious cocktails from an extensive list, before picking our meal. There was a good choice and the food was beautifully presented, service was very attentive and overall the experience was well above my expectations. We were in Leicester on business and this was perfect for a mid-week meal in an unpretentious environment. Apr 16th 2008

The Maiyango Restaurant and Cocktail Bar unquestionably provides one of the best mid-week dining experiences in Leicester. The food is second to none, and the service was exemplary. We were provided with a delicious soup before our starters, and palett-cleansing sorbets between our chosen courses, both free of charge. The cocktail menu is also very impressive, but don't have too many or walking home may be an issue! Apr 8th 2008

By far the best restaurant in Leicester. Wonderful food, simple, but with a twist. I had the beef and prawns, absolutely fantastic, and cooked to perfection. The scallops for starter we wonderfully subtle, and the wood pigeon had a fantastic gamey taste, that worked really well with the sweet potato. Mar 28th 2008

Maiyango - what an amazing restaurant. The food was excellent and the service was faultless. The ambience of the restaurant is lovely - we had one of the booths that was really intimate and cosy but yet still picked up on the atmoshpere from the rest of the tables. The lamb dish was one of the best I had eaten and the little treats in between the courses were a welcome surprise. If i'm ever in Leicester, I would definitely go back here. Loved it!! Maiyango Restaurant in Leicester. We wanted a special venue and a special meal to celebrate our wedding anniversary, we definitely weren't disappointed. Although we visited on a quiet night (Monday) there was still a good atmosphere. The waiter was first class, he was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable; nothing was too much trouble. Cocktails before meal were good, the food afterwards was excellent and could not be faulted in any way. Highly recommended, and we shall return ourselves. Dec 31st 2007
